The four most significant types of charisma are focus charisma, visionary charisma, kindness charisma, and authority charisma. They each create different reactions in others and require different cues to utilize.

Analysis

Focus charisma gives the impression of being committed to a particular goal or issue. Visionary charisma is used to win others over to a particular image of the future. Kindness charisma relies on warmth to make others feel listened to and cared for. Authority charisma involves more power, and it is used to make others follow instructions. Anyone can develop skills in all four of these types of charisma, and skilled users of charisma shift from one to the other as needed.

For example, in business negotiations, all four different types of charisma can be used in rapid succession. An executive might begin by earning the trust of the rest of the executives to represent them in negotiations because of focus charisma skills that make him seem committed to the goal of a smooth acquisition. He then would gain an understanding of his own company’s position and receive honest evaluations of what managers need by smiling and speaking in a warm tone, so that managers feel comfortable sharing their thoughts. At the negotiating table, the executive would use authority charisma to convince the other company of the importance of the acquisition and the confidence he has in its success. If the other company’s representative wanted to appeal to the executive for more concessions, the executive would switch back to kindness charisma to appear sympathetic but still in control. Having persuaded the other company to proceed and come to an agreement about the terms, the executive would then use visionary charisma when presenting the results to the company and persuade them that it will lead to a brighter future for everyone involved.
